Apparently Kingston’s watering restrictions are heavily enforced. Most home owners know during the summer you can only water your lawn between 6am and 10am on even days if you have an even address and odd days if you have an odd address. All the details are here. And, they don’t mess around…even if you are 82 years old and want to water your 8 foot garden!
Scott Weiland has responded to Internet rumors that he has been either lip-synching or using backing vocal tracks during the band’s concerts. The allegations arose after video surfaced of Weiland falling off the stage at a concert last Wednesday in Cincinnati, during which it appeared that his vocals never wavered despite the fact that he fell headfirst and seemed to land heavily.
His reply, “I would like to dispel a rumor swirling its way around the Interwebs that I am not singing these songs that I wrote. There has never been a time in the 25-plus years that I have been singing with these guys or a combination of these guys or with other musicians that I have not sang. So whoever started that bulls*** claim, like so many other bulls*** claims, which is the problem with modern technology . . . We are a rock and roll band, (and) rock and roll bands perform live.”
Wow, it had been awhile since we had some live music on The Drive, but it came back in fine form…with an accordion!!! Kingston’s “The Gertrudes” stopped by to promote their brand new CD “Dawn Time Riot” and their CD release party Friday night (August 27th) at the Wolfe Island Grill. Check it out!
One of my favourite CDs in 2010 (even though it came out late ’09) is “Sainthood” from Tegan and Sara so it was a real treat to chat with Tegan Quin and discuss it, family life, and touring. And “yes”, I ask when the hell are they coming back to Kingston. It was an absolute pleasure talking with her. Have a listen…
I got a strange phone call on the air today…it was from someone claiming to be my 3rd cousin Ingrid. I don’t think I have a 3rd cousin named Ingrid and what’s even more strange is she wants money. Have a listen…
Oh and by the way, this story is making news in Kingston today. Coincidence?
Police are warning residents of phone scams in the city.
OPP have received reports of residents getting random phone calls from people identifying themselves as a family member, and asking for emergency money.
Victims of the scam are being advised to report the incident to police so they can refer it to the Anti-Fraud Centre through PhoneBusters. Visit www.phonebusters.com to report or view the current list of scams, tips and news.

MAN SETS WORLD RECORD FOR LONGEST ACTIVE E-MAIL ADDRESS
According to his website, Peter Craig holds more world records than any other Australian. Spinning, clapping, one-legged jump roping — you name the weird record-setting feat, and Craig’s probably done it. He’s also the proud owner of a Wagnerian e-mail address which, at 345 characters, is the world’s longest. And it works, too. So go ahead and drop him a line of congratulations at:
The only thing I love more than music in LIVE music and you can’t beat summer festivals. This weekend (Sat/Sun) I’m returning to my hometown of Montreal to see a relatively new festival: Osheaga! Let’s start with the pronunciation…it’s OH-SHEE-AH-GA. It’ll be my first time and I’m super-pumped. How could you go wrong? Some of the best classic and new alternative bands. And, tickets are still available. Let’s look at the facts:
Montreal is one of the most beautiful cities in the world (and recently declared 2nd friendliest). Check!
It is only a three hour drive from Kingston. Check!
It falls on Ontario’s long civic weekend. Check!
At $120 for a two-day pass, it is unbelievably cheap. Check!
For fans of alternative music, the festival competes with some of the tops festivals around the world. Check!
The music – Day One.
Cage the Elephant, Kingston’s Sarah Harmer, K’NAAN, Stars, Keane, Pavement, The National (I hear awesome things about this band), and one of the hottest bands Montreal’s Arcade Fire!
The music – Day Two.
Gaslight Anthem (love these guys), The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, Metric (I know…AGAIN), legendary Sonic Youth, Devo (whip it real good), Deadmau5, and Weezer!
Where was this festival when I was growing up? Montreal doesn’t even have an alternative radio station. Now, if only we could get it to travel…Kingston anyone? How about we start a facebook group?
Next weekend (Aug. 6th and 7th) 98.9 THE DRIVE is a proud sponsor of the Wolfe Island Music Fest and it is going to be a lot of fun for everyone that goes. Awesome music, great location, food, drink, etc…It was been voted one of the top festivals in Ontario and bands like Wolf Parade, Constantines, Joel Plaskett, Wintersleep, and more have all played the main stage. This year’s headliners are the Weakerthans…you know, the guys who sing the “I Hate Winnipeg” song. But, who else will be there? Shad, The Acorn, Cuff the Duke, and my guest in studio today for another “Live @ THE DRIVE”. His name is Justin Bird. Have a listen.
Ok folks, I really need your help. Emily Fennell needs your help. Let’s create a stink…remember a few weeks back when we all got on board and voted to get Emily to play Lillith Fair in Toronto? It was an open contest organized by ourstage.com and she won…kinda. By the time the contest closed, she had the most votes and it would seem she should get the coveted spot. Well, the fine print said otherwise and instead chose the person voted #14 (Darrelle London). This is an outrage!!! What’s the point in even having a contest? Makes no sense and we shouldn’t stand for it. I am asking you (and God knows I don’t ask for much…lol) to e-mail the folks at ourstage.com and ask them, “What the hell is going on?”. Here’s the e-mail addy: community@ourstage.com ask for Karl. For the record, I’ve e-mailed them several times for an interview and after I explained why, I never heard from them again.
