Apparently Kingston’s watering restrictions are heavily enforced. Most home owners know during the summer you can only water your lawn between 6am and 10am on even days if you have an even address and odd days if you have an odd address. All the details are here. And, they don’t mess around…even if you are 82 years old and want to water your 8 foot garden!
UPDATE!! I am still trying to get the by-law officer on the air to tell her side of the story and maybe apologize. However, after calling City of Kingston this week, I discovered she is on vacation until Monday. I’ll try again next week. In the meantime, I received this interesting e-mail.
Hey!
I was just listening in the car and I heard the interview with the lady who got fined for watering her flowers. I could have guessed which bylaw officer it was that ticketed her: Angela
I figured it must be her because I too have had the (dis)pleasure of dealing with that woman.
I may not be 82 but I know just how Mrs. Arenburg must have felt and how she was probably treated by the little power-tripping so-and-so.
Angela caught me while soaking wet, coming out of the lake with my dog — a dog which was ‘at large’ according to the law. She asked me for my ID, I asked her for hers. She did not provide it, but instead got on her phone to call the police! Just like that, swimming with my dog was suddenly a police matter. I was livid and humiliated. A woman approached me and told me that the same officer had just been a few hundred yards down the waterfront and also ticketed four people there. (more…)
This morning Jenn and I talked to 12 year old Shane White. This guy’s been fishing most of his life, and wanted us all to help him get his favourite fishing area the national recognition he feels it deserves.
Here’s some background:
The small hamlet of Seeley’s Bay Ontario, on the Rideau Canal, has beat out 990 other communities in Canada to be able to go for the gold – with the help of friends from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Eastern Ontario and beyond. They will now compete with 9 other remaining finalists to be named the Ultimate Fishing Town in Canada by the World Fishing Network. The final winner of the competition will receive the coveted title and $25,000 in prize money that can be used to fund community improvements. Seeley’s Bay is asking people to help them win by voting for them here.
This morning, Jenn and I mentioned this little item: Merriam-Webster is reporting that the non-word “refudiate,” used by Sarah Palin in July, was their “Word of the Summer,” meaning it got the most searches on the publisher’s online dictionary this summer. Palin used the word on a news show and in a Twitter message calling on New Yorkers to denounce the planned Islamic community center near Ground Zero, confusing the words “refute” and “repudiate.” The words have similar definitions, with “refute” meaning to prove something wrong or deny its truth or accuracy, while “repudiate” means to refuse any connection with something or reject it as untrue or unjust. Lots of Drive listeners weighed in with their unwords on our facebook page, and a big thanks to Kenny and Ryan who added a couple of their own: kenny and ryan sept 8
The Drive presents Alexisonfire, December 12th at Stages. Jenn and I announced the show this morning at 7:10, then we mentioned that the Drive has Beat the Box Office tickets up for grabs. Here’s how that went: Jerry Sept 7
Jenn and I phoned up Chris St. Clair from the Weather Network to get, among other things, details on how the last long weekend of the summer was going to shape up. chris st clair
I got a strange phone call on the air today…it was from someone claiming to be my 3rd cousin Ingrid. I don’t think I have a 3rd cousin named Ingrid and what’s even more strange is she wants money. Have a listen…
Oh and by the way, this story is making news in Kingston today. Coincidence?
Police are warning residents of phone scams in the city.
OPP have received reports of residents getting random phone calls from people identifying themselves as a family member, and asking for emergency money.
Victims of the scam are being advised to report the incident to police so they can refer it to the Anti-Fraud Centre through PhoneBusters. Visit www.phonebusters.com to report or view the current list of scams, tips and news.

After about five years of fish and veggies rolled up in rice, Kingston seems to be leaning a new direction for it’s food. Over the next few weeks we’ll see at least four new places open downtown that want to become known for their Poutine! Is this just an attempt to catch up to the average size of our neighbors to the south? Or a way of leveraging the nostalgia of the night’s that finished at Bubba’s when you were in school? Our friends at the Kingstonist provide a little more info and a cool online poll for you at http://www.kingstonist.com/2010/08/16/the-burger-poutine-wars/
Meet John, Kevin, Nathan and Jamie. Three of them are running to be Kingston’s Mayor in this fall’s municipal election. Jenn and I talked with them this morning about why they’re doing it; if it’s a joke and why anyone should care. They had pretty good answers to all our questions. Maybe you have some of your own.
