Many thanks to a happy Drive listener named Elizabeth, who just got back from seeing this great show after winning tickets on The Drive.
“City and Colour was amazing and Dallas Green is so humble and was just sweetly honored that the crowd would come to see him. In his own words “I wasn’t planning on saying anything tonight and just play but Holy Shit.” lol There were goosebumps moments and I have the links from the show to just a couple of songs that blew us away like Save Your Scissors and The Girl. And to end the show, with great awe to the crowd, Gord Downie came from back stage to join in “Sleeping Sickness.”
Thank you, thank you, thank you for an amazing night and if there is a chance to request anything by City and Colour to be played, it would be greatly appreciated.
Scott Sutton was the first winner on Jim and Matt’s Healthy Heart Snack contest. He won a sweet prize pack from the Heart and Stroke Foundation that includes a snow saucer, snow ball/snow brick maker, a fleece blanket and mittens, and a Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker. (more…)

Okay, maybe it’s because I teach Media at St. Lawrence College, or maybe it’s because one of my best friends is behind this, but I thought this was quite cool when I found out about it:
St. Lawrence College: For the Win!
For the Win is a video contest for St. Lawrence students. We figure that students can tell their story, especially to other students, better than we ever could. So we are launching a new video contest just for them. Students are encouraged to create their own short video (30 to 90 sec.) about why they love slc, and enter until November 11 at slcftw.com. The video with the most votes wins!Just think, a video that hundreds will see, telling people how great their program, professors, classmates, college and student experience is. Spread the word
So, if you go to St. Lawrence College…and you think you’ve got the video that really tells the SLC story (and if you’re one of my students, the one that tells what an amazing Media teacher you have), then you should click in.
Here’s the email we received from our No Doubt Essential Adventure winner Alynn Boyle:
Hey!
Well, the concert was amazing! It was such a great show, they played all their old stuff, and sounded fantastic. Did I mention the seats were great as well? We were 21 rows up on the left side of the stage.
The day started out with me cutting work early to catch the 230pm train, with my brother as Kurt was not able to go, so my brother was more than happy to take his place.
ALBUM: The Clash- “Sandinista”. This one is an obvious pick for me. First of all…it’s long. It has 38 songs. It’s also a good pick as it includes a lot of “island-y” music like reggae and even calypso
BOOK: Jack Kerouac- “On The Road.” Cool travel stories from early/mid 90′s Americana. Includes funny lingo.
FILM: Juno. No real reason for this…I just like the movie. It’s a good combo of funny and drama, which I think you would need on a desert island.
Matt’s Alt Pick- Coachella Styles: Saturday, March 28, 2009…this week featuring…
The Black Keys
These two dudes from Akron, Ohio are a solid mix of blues/hard/indie rock. They’ve had a strong following since the release of their debut album “The Big Come Up” in 2002. Radiohead, Beck, Pearl Jam and even Led Zeppelin have expressed their fondness for the band. They blew up last year with the release of the album “Attack and Release” which was produced by Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley. They will be playing on the Saturday night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
As you may or may not know, every Saturday night, just after 7:10, I am spinning a track from a lesser known Coachella artist. Consider this your essential education ahead of our big draw for a trip for two to the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival. Each week I’ll play a new artist and blog some more info about them. I forgot to do last week’s, so here goes:
Band of Horses
One of my favorite bands right now is this group from Seattle, Washington. They are a sweet combination of old school roots rock in the vein of classic Neil Young and newer Indie flavours, like Death Cab For Cutie. They have two full-length albums that are, in my opinion, flawless. They will be playing on the Saturday of Coachella.
Now…coming up THIS Saturday (March 21, 2009) just after 7:10…
TV ON THE RADIO
These dudes from New York City became Spin Magazine’s favorite band EVER, following the release of their 2006 album “Return to Cookie Mountain.”
They solidified their position as one of the top indie bands last year, with the release of the follow-up “Dear Science.” This was named 2008 album of the year in both Spin and Rolling Stone magazines. They even appeared (and performed) on “The Colbert Report.”
Congratulations again to Eve Hussey, our grand prize winner to see Coldplay LIVE in London! Well, her and Alan are now back in Canada after their Essential Adventure and they sent us this great email this morning about their trip:
Hi Jim and Matt,
So, we made it home safe and sound and luckily before the snow storm hit too!
The entire trip was very busy and exciting!
Friday So, when we arrived our room wasn’t ready, it was 8am mind you…so we decided to go for a bit of a walk around the area. We went over to Buckingham Palace where we wanted to drop in and have a nice cup of tea with the Queen but she wasn’t in so then decided to head over to Harrods which is in Knightsbridge…I took us in the wrong direction and ended up a good hike from Harrods! So after figuring out the map and asking someone we ended up in Harrods and it was a complete zoo of people! We were really tired after being awake for over 24hrs straight so we walked right back out again and headed to a pub down the street for something to eat. (more…)
For this year’s Kingston United Way campaign, the DRIVE did it’s bit by auctioning off hours of the Morning Rush. The highest bidders would get to spend an hour of their choosing as our co-hosts, and live the thrilling and rewarding life of a morning radio host…for an hour.
Bidding was fast and furious, and in the end Julianne, Kelly and Sean won out. Can’t wait for them to come in here and let Matt and I do even less work.
This was how it sounded when we announced our three top bidders, who together added another $1075 to this year’s United Way campaign total! united-way-total-nov-61
