Jenn and I got to share a rare treat with our Drive listeners on Tuesday morning. Our Essential Adventure Party house band Telefoto dragged all their gear into our little studio and played their brand new release live!
The Drive is presenting the band’s CD release party on October 1st. Call us Wednesday morning @ 8:20 and we might be able to get you in free!
Wow, it had been awhile since we had some live music on The Drive, but it came back in fine form…with an accordion!!! Kingston’s “The Gertrudes” stopped by to promote their brand new CD “Dawn Time Riot” and their CD release party Friday night (August 27th) at the Wolfe Island Grill. Check it out!
Next weekend (Aug. 6th and 7th) 98.9 THE DRIVE is a proud sponsor of the Wolfe Island Music Fest and it is going to be a lot of fun for everyone that goes. Awesome music, great location, food, drink, etc…It was been voted one of the top festivals in Ontario and bands like Wolf Parade, Constantines, Joel Plaskett, Wintersleep, and more have all played the main stage. This year’s headliners are the Weakerthans…you know, the guys who sing the “I Hate Winnipeg” song. But, who else will be there? Shad, The Acorn, Cuff the Duke, and my guest in studio today for another “Live @ THE DRIVE”. His name is Justin Bird. Have a listen.
Well I was doing mornings last week, but my good friend “Lock” had Daniel Wesley in for another Live @ THE DRIVE. He was in town doing a show at the Time to Laff with another great band, Rebel Emergency. Anyway, if you missed it or would like to listen again, here you go.
Btw, next week we are gearing up for the return of Sweet Thing. 98.9 THE DRIVE presents the show at The Mansion Thursday July 8th. Will have have tickets to give away next week and hopefully another interview and Live @ THE DRIVE performance. We will keep you posted.
It was like a “Live @ THE DRIVE” on steroids. We rolled out the red carpet “just because” for new Toronto band “Sweet Thing“. For starters, we expanded our studio to the boardroom. We then invited our listeners in for pop and pizza, gave them autographed merch, and we all enjoyed some live music. I’ll admit, I’m pretty sweet ontheir first single “Dance Mother”. It’s catchy and makes me want to dance…mother. Anyway, check them out. Their self-titled CD is out August 17th and they’ll be back to play The Merchant July 8th. Here’s how it all went down.
Thanks to Kingston Sound Works for help with the equipment. More great photos courtesy of We Shot It photographers Robert Smirle and Jordan Cook on Facebook.
Domenica returned to Kingston for a second time in 6 months and they also made a second stop at THE DRIVE. If you want to see an energetic hard rock performance, check them out with Hail The Villain tonight (June 11th) at The Mansion. Today they did a stripped down version of their second single from The Luxury CD. It’s called “What Goes Around”. Check it and the interview out.
Well folks, I think we have a real contender for Reid’s “Best of” Live @ THE DRIVE 2010. I had heard a lot of great things about Kingston’s Pelt and today the rumours were confirmed. For whatever reason, I had never seen them live before and after only one song, I realized I’m missing out. As far as energy goes, easily the best performance in THE DRIVE studio. No, I’m not just saying that because I was surrounded by three chicks (I get the feeling they’re ok being called “chicks” – if not I appologize). Lead singer Genene was bouncing, dancing, and jumping while belting out some great vocals. Needless to say I will need to finally check out a full show and you should too. You can start by heading to The Mansion on Saturday June 5th, they’ll be performing. Otherwise, check them out on myspace or pick up their new CD, “Static in the Attic”.
With your help, it could happen. Kingstonian Emily Fennell stopped by today to give us another beautiful performance of “The Sellout”. She has also submitted the song to the Lilith Local Talent Search for Toronto and with your votes, you could help her be a part of that festival. Emily is so talented and works so hard, we are very fortunate to have her before she becomes a BIG star. Hurry, contest closes this weekend. Click on the link and make it happen…and to hear her performance and interview, see below.
Another Fired Up Friday (May 7th, 2010) and more great live music. No stranger to THE DRIVE or Kingston, Natasha Pasternak stopped by with her brand new band Hands and Teeth to perform before their gig at The Merchant. Check it out.
For the second time in three months, one of the hottest bands to emerge from Ottawa stopped by THE DRIVE. 98.9 THE DRIVE presented Hollerado for two shows at The Mansion April 23rd (check pix on facebook) and once again, the warm-up was in our studio. Last time they were here I asked for their big hit “Juliette” acoustic…they said they weren’t ready, but promised next time. Next time, they delivered.
