Reid’s Rant: Jack White’s Literal Record Launch
Ok, this is pretty cool. Good luck in finding one. – Reid
Jack White has hit upon a new method to distribute his music in the waning days of the traditional record business: via balloon. 1,000 copies of a flexi-disc containing the new song “Freedom At 21” were attached to helium balloons and launched from the Nashville headquarters of White’s Third Man Records on Sunday (April 1st). Accompanying the balloons were custom postcards with instructions for the finders to submit photos, the discovery location and the date on which the record was found, all of which will be posted in a special section at the Third Man website.
The launch used biodegradable latex balloons and all-natural twine. With the recovery rate for balloon launches like this standing at 10 percent, there is a chance that only 100 of the records will be found, which is sure to make the flexi-disc a rare collectible item.
“Freedom At 21″ is taken from White’s first solo album, Blunderbuss, which arrives on April 24th.
