METRIC Monday surpassed all my expectations…Thank You Kingston, Thank You METRIC! Back in the Fall I had this little idea of trying to bring a band I love and our listeners adore (all of METRIC’s singles from Fantasies have tested the highest) to Kingston. I was skeptical, but hopeful. Well, as you know it happened and I’m still smiling. Not only did they put on a wonderful performance, the beautiful and talented Emily Haines asked if I was at the show. “Is Mike Reid here?” she said. As chills continued to roll down my spine, she proceeded to mention 98.9 The Drive and the whole story of how the show in Kingston came to be. Classy! Thank you Jessica for capturing it all on video. Have a look.
Back stage at the meet and greet, they could not have been more polite. They were so happy to see us and appreciative of all the support from 98.9 THE DRIVE. Since it was METRIC Monday, I presented them with the “official proclamation”. Check out the video of Emily accepting and reading the award.
A perfect end to a perfect campaign! Once again, thanks to the Arkells for a great performance during the live broadcast. See post below. Tons of great pix on our facebook page.
We did it, we made it happen. Last Fall when I noticed Metric was playing in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto but NOT Kingston, I thought…Why Not? Eight months later, April 5th, 98.9 THE DRIVE presents Metric with The Arkells at The KRC. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am at The KRC Box Office.
How did it happen? Well, eight months ago it started with a Bring Metric To Kingston facebook page. Then an e-mail and phone call to their radio rep. He put me in touch with Metric’s manager who eventually agreed to an on air interview to explain WHY NOT Kingston.
Several more e-mails to the Metric management finally got me an interview with lead singer Emily Haines in December where she said they would come to Kingston in 2010.
I was a bit of a pain in the ass, but it was worth it. And, it could not have happened without the help of every single fantastic 98.9 The Drive listener. I am so happy about the show! Thank you Kingston, thank you to the entire Metric team.

Finally…finally, I got the chance to talk to Emily Haines from METRIC. I was starting to wonder. I haven’t really wanted to interview anyone that much in a really long time. Part of it was because I love her, the band, and especially, the music. The other part had to do with my quest to get them to play Kingston. I started a facebook group, I interviewed their manager, but I hadn’t personally asked Emily if/when they will come back to Kingston. That’s all changed now. I’m giddy. I felt like we had a really nice conversation. She was sweet, sincere, and just a pleasure to talk to. My only complaint is I wish we could have spoken longer, maybe when they come to Kingston…If you missed it or would like to hear it again, have a listen to the full, raw, and unedited interview.
As if Emily Haines’ voice couldn’t get any more beautiful or the “Fantasies” CD couldn’t get any better, it is about to do just that. This Tuesday, October 27, METRIC will be releasing PLUG IN PLUG OUT on Amazon.com. After 30 days, the EP will also be available on iTunes, directly from the band on ilovemetric.com, and other fine digital retailers.
Check out some acoustic videos and a preview of the EP, which features acoustic versions from their latest album FANTASIES below!
Well, I tried. Metric will NOT be making a stop in Kingston in October when they do a run of Ontario dates. I’m very disappointed, but there isn’t much more I can do. At least they now know they are loved in Kingston and won’t forget us next time. I spoke with their manager Matt and he says hopefully next summer. BTW, the facebook group still exists and will keep going until it happens.
